American clarinetist Dr. Victoria Deutsch is an avid performer, educator, and researcher. She has performed internationally and throughout the United States. Her teaching and research has reached individuals of all ages and levels of music education.
Victoria is currently located in Southwest Germany teaching and freelancing in the surrounding areas. She was previously the Admissions Coordinator and Senior Recruitment Specialist for the University of Missouri’s School of Music where she also taught general music courses and clarinet. Alongside performing and teaching, Victoria also serves as the Vice President of Music Ancestry, a non-profit organization that provides a crowd-sourced online database for musicians to track their pedagogical lineage. Previously, Victoria served as the Clarinet Graduate Teaching Assistant, teaching clarinet lessons and methods courses, at Michigan State University where she received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Clarinet Performance. Previously, she performed with the Mizzou New Music Ensemble as the Clarinet/ Bass Clarinet Graduate Assistant with whom she premiered many new works. Victoria has also previously performed as guest bass clarinetist with the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra (GA) and as staff clarinetist/bass clarinetist in the Tennessee Valley Winds Festival Faculty Orchestra. Internationally, she has been featured as a soloist and chamber musician in Belgium, Ireland, Germany, and Canada.
Victoria's teaching philosophy centers around the concept of molding her students into their own teachers. Her pedagogical techniques nurture her studio's success leading her students to being accepted into collegiate programs, starting their own studios, and winning competitions. The level of her private students range from beginner to collegiate and ages from seven to fifty-six. Victoria has also frequently taught in group settings such as high school clarinet choirs and sectionals, as clarinet instructor intern for the Tennessee Valley Winds Festival and as a chamber music coach at the University of Missouri and Michigan State University. She also previously served as the clarinet adjudicator for the 2015 Georgia Governor's Honors Program.
Victoria’s current research analyzes and emphasizes the importance of multidisciplinary chamber performances of contemporary music. One of her previous pedagogical research documents, The Evolution of the Clarinet and Its Effect on Compositions Written for the Instrument, has been referenced in other academic writings such as theses and university research papers. Her research concerning students' responses to differing pedagogical approaches has also informed other clarinet instructors on new, engaging ways to communicate with their students.
Victoria holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Clarinet Performance from the Michigan State University, a Master’s in Music Performance from the University of Missouri, and a Bachelor’s in Music Performance from Columbus State University. Her principal instructors are Dr. Mingzhe Wang, Dr. Wesley Warnhoff, and Dr. Lisa Oberlander.
